The staff are fantastic with the residents, who mainly suffer from various stages of dementia although some also have other conditions too. We have great fun during the classes and of course you never know what one of the residents is going to do or say. It's a happy time for both them and us, also knowing that you're making a difference to their health & well being.
I really do look forward to going along every week, although it can be quite upsetting if one of them has taken ill, had a fall or their condition has deteriorated. One of my favourites, a lovely man called Bill who would show us his swimming skills (from the comfort of his wheelchair) sadly passed away recently. He used to receive a weekly massage from me aswell & we always had a giggle - before he fell asleep mid way through! It must be very tough for the stafff as they become so attached to them, as I do!
But there are lots of activities to keep everyone busy & as active and positive as they can be, and I hope I stay working at the unit for a long long time
